Sensors

Balluff has engineered industrial sensors in Germany for decades, and today offers one of the broadest sensor portfolios in automation. Whether you need to detect an object, measure a distance, monitor a position or keep an eye on process conditions, there is a Balluff sensor built for the job and the environment.

Inductive sensors are the backbone of the range. They detect metal objects without contact and without wear. They include inductive proximity switches and proximity sensors, ring and tube sensors for small parts on fast feeding lines, inductive distance sensors for precise, wear-free measurement, and inductive position sensors and high-speed position measuring systems for exact, repeatable positioning. For non-metal materials, capacitive sensors detect plastics, wood, glass, powders and liquids, and are often used for level detection through the wall of a container or tank.

Photoelectric sensors cover a wide range of detection tasks. They include diffuse sensors with background suppression, retroreflective sensors, through-beam sensors, fibre optic sensors, and laser distance sensors for long-range measurement. Many models have teach-in for quick set-up. Ultrasonic sensors work regardless of colour, transparency or surface finish, so they are reliable for clear materials, liquids, bulk goods and dusty environments.

For pneumatic automation, magnetic field sensors detect piston position in cylinders and grippers, fitting directly into the T-slot or C-slot. For precise linear measurement, Balluff Micropulse magnetostrictive linear position transducers and magnetic encoders provide absolute, contactless position feedback on hydraulic cylinders, presses and moving axes. The range also covers sensors for pressure, temperature, flow and condition monitoring, so you can monitor processes and machine health from the same supplier.

Many Balluff sensors are IO-Link smart sensors. As well as a switching signal, they deliver measured values, diagnostics and remote parameterisation, which supports predictive maintenance, faster format changeovers and less unplanned downtime. Robust housings, stainless steel and hygienic designs, and high IP ratings make the range well suited to Ireland’s pharmaceutical, biopharma, medical device, food and beverage, packaging, machine-building and data centre industries.

Frequently asked questions about Sensors

Which type of sensor do I need?

It depends on what you’re detecting and the environment. Inductive sensors detect metal. Capacitive sensors detect non-metals such as plastics, powders and liquids. Photoelectric sensors detect almost any object using light, often over longer distances. Ultrasonic sensors work regardless of colour or transparency. If you’re not sure, contact our team with your application details and we’ll recommend the right technology.

What is the difference between inductive and capacitive sensors?

Inductive sensors detect metal objects only and are very robust in harsh industrial conditions. Capacitive sensors detect both metal and non-metal materials, including plastic, wood, glass, granules and liquids, and can sense through a container wall. That makes them popular for level detection.

What is the difference between photoelectric and ultrasonic sensors?

Photoelectric sensors use a light beam and are fast and precise, but clear, shiny or very dark surfaces can make detection harder. Ultrasonic sensors use sound waves, so colour, transparency and surface finish don’t affect them. They are a good choice for glass, clear films, liquids and dusty environments.

What types of photoelectric sensors are available?

The main types are diffuse sensors, which detect light reflected from the object; diffuse sensors with background suppression, which ignore objects behind the target; retroreflective sensors, which use a reflector; and through-beam sensors, which use a separate emitter and receiver for the longest ranges. Fibre optic and laser distance sensors are also available for specialist tasks.

What is a magnetic field sensor used for?

Magnetic field sensors are mainly used to detect piston position in pneumatic cylinders and grippers. They mount directly in the cylinder’s T-slot or C-slot and detect the magnet built into the piston.

What is a linear position transducer?

A linear position transducer measures the exact position of a moving part along a straight line, for example a hydraulic cylinder rod or a machine axis. Balluff Micropulse transducers use magnetostrictive technology for absolute, contactless and wear-free measurement.

Tekox Terminal Strips Safety Blocks and Porcelain Blocks

Great electrical installations don't fail because of the major components. They fail because of the small ones that didn't get enough attention.
It's easy to focus on the big-ticket items during specification — and let the terminal blocks become an afterthought. But inferior connection components have a habit of making themselves known over time. Loose connections, degraded insulation, premature failure. The kind of faults that are frustrating to trace and expensive to fix.
Tekox engineer their terminal strips, safety blocks, insulated strips, and porcelain blocks to the standards your installations deserve. Available now from Demesne Electrical — get in touch and we'll show you the range.
