Connectivity

Every sensor and actuator on a machine relies on its cable and connector. A loose connection or a damaged cable can stop a line as surely as a failed sensor. Balluff connectivity products give you a complete, standardised system for linking field devices to your control system: plug-and-play connections that cut wiring time, reduce errors and make maintenance quicker.

The range starts with cordsets. Single-ended cordsets have a moulded connector at one end and open wires at the other, for wiring sensors into terminals or control cabinets. Double-ended cordsets have connectors at both ends, for fast plug-and-play links between sensors, actuators, hubs and IO-Link masters. Both come in M8, M12 and other common connector types, with straight or angled heads, a choice of lengths, and cable jackets such as PUR and PVC to suit flexing, oil, welding or washdown environments. For custom lengths or your own assemblies, bulk cables are available in a range of conductor counts and jacket materials.

To simplify wiring on the machine, Y-splitters and tees let you connect two devices to a single port or route signals efficiently, reducing the number of cables and ports you need. Field attachable connectors can be fitted on site without special tools, which is ideal for repairs, retrofits and non-standard lengths. Bulkhead connectors and receptacles provide sealed, panel-mounted connection points on enclosures, control cabinets and machine housings. Adapters convert between connector types and sizes, so different devices work together without rewiring.

Terminating resistors close fieldbus and network segments correctly to keep communication stable. Passive junction blocks gather the signals from multiple sensors and actuators in the field and send them back over a single home-run cable. This cuts cabling and cabinet wiring, and makes installation and troubleshooting much simpler.

Balluff connectivity products are built for industrial conditions, with high IP ratings, robust moulded connectors and cable jackets matched to the application. They are a strong fit for Ireland’s pharmaceutical, medical device, food and beverage, packaging and machine-building industries, and pair directly with Balluff sensors, RFID and IO-Link networking. Demesne can help you choose the right connector, cable jacket and length for your application, with local supply from Dublin, Cork and Dungannon.

Frequently asked questions about Connectivity

What is a cordset?

A cordset is a cable with a moulded connector already fitted. A single-ended cordset has a connector at one end and open wires at the other. A double-ended cordset has a connector at both ends for plug-and-play connections between devices.

What is the difference between M8 and M12 connectors?

The number is the thread diameter in millimetres. M8 connectors are smaller and suit compact sensors and tight spaces. M12 is the most widely used industrial connector and supports more pins and higher currents. It is the standard for most sensors, actuators and IO-Link devices.

Which cable jacket should I choose?

PUR (polyurethane) is the usual choice for flexing, oil resistance and drag chains. PVC is a cost-effective option for static installations. For welding areas or washdown environments, choose a jacket rated for spatter or cleaning chemicals. If you’re not sure, ask our team.

What is a Y-splitter used for?

A Y-splitter connects two sensors or actuators to a single port, or splits one cable into two. This reduces the number of ports and cables needed on a machine.

What is a field attachable connector?

A field attachable connector can be fitted to a cable on site, without special tools. It’s useful for repairs, non-standard lengths and retrofits where a moulded cordset isn’t available.

What does a junction block do?

A passive junction block collects signals from several sensors and actuators in the field and sends them back to the control cabinet over a single home-run cable. This reduces cabling, simplifies installation and makes troubleshooting easier.

Tekox Terminal Strips Safety Blocks and Porcelain Blocks

Great electrical installations don't fail because of the major components. They fail because of the small ones that didn't get enough attention.
It's easy to focus on the big-ticket items during specification — and let the terminal blocks become an afterthought. But inferior connection components have a habit of making themselves known over time. Loose connections, degraded insulation, premature failure. The kind of faults that are frustrating to trace and expensive to fix.
Tekox engineer their terminal strips, safety blocks, insulated strips, and porcelain blocks to the standards your installations deserve. Available now from Demesne Electrical — get in touch and we'll show you the range.
